Race the Lake of the Sky

I had an amazing time shooting at one of South Lake Tahoe's most singular events, Race the Lake of the Sky. The annual weekend-long standup paddle party is put on by my friends over at South Tahoe Standup Paddle. The competition includes a 5-mile race, a 14-mile race and the always-entertaining SUP Cross, SUP High Jump and the Sweet Moves Contest. Above 404 rider Danny Ching leads the pack in the El Dorado 5-miler Saturday.

Happy International Surfing Day!

Here's to the original surfers! But also the folks over at Surfrider have a great list of events and happenings going on this ISD. Hope everyone has fun today!

Hiding out in Desolation Wilderness

Every summer, I try to spend as much time as I can hiking and camping in Desolation Wilderness. The snow doesn't melt out until June or so, so it's kind of a short sun season up there. Usually, it's just a matter of weeks that the many small lakes are bearable for swimmers. If you like cold water, you might get a few extra days in.

My new beat

Somehow, I've been relegated to covering coffee on a near-regular basis for Outside. While this isn't what I would've envisioned for myself 10 years ago, it does make sense— in a way. I love coffee. I drink it every morning. After my latest story, I now know more about it than I ever expected to.

One moment at a time

I've had such a good time shooting with my iPhone lately. I like aggregating the images on Instagram and viewing them as a gallery. I've found a lot of great inspiration on there too. Some of my favorite accounts are @mullady, @zaknoyle, @chrisburkard, @natgeo (of course), @andywickstrom and @camp4collective— but really there are too many to list. Feel free to say hi @dylan_silver. Happy 'gramming!

Floating around with a camera

Silver-Surf-2.jpg

I bought a Canon G16 recently and have been toying around with it for the last few weeks. One thing I like about Canon's point-and-shoot line is that the company makes decent affordable water housings for them. While the surf was small in Santa Cruz last weekend, I swam around and shot some photos of friends surfing. Though the images aren't professional quality, they are a great jumping off place for shooting in the water.

Mountain biking Mammoth

I spent the weekend riding mountain bikes around Mammoth Lakes. The trails are spectacular. Many of the single tracks flow really well and offer more technical sections for, um, good riders. Above, local shredder Luke Wynen splashes through a creek on the Sand Canyon trail. Other notable routes include Rock Creek Trail and Wagon Wheel Trail.
